Having read the two pieces cited by Draconian above, I do commend Mr Ghani, but I see nothing here that holds a candle to any of Shashi Tharoor's books or articles, notably <a href="http://www.worldpolicy.org/journal/tharoor.html" target="_blank">his essay on the universality of human rights</a>, his <a href="http://www.shashitharoor.com/articles/foreignaffairs.html" target="_blank">Foreign Affairs piece on why the US needs the UN</a>, and his essay on the Role of the Secretary-General -- all topics more directly relevant to the main work of a UN SG than Mr Ghani's areas of expertise. So, to echo Draco, "Go read them, and then ask yourself whether you would rather have a person who can think like that at the helm of the UN"? i’m delighted to see intellectual qualifications being mentioned as important to a UN SG, which is precisely why I have been so intrigued by Shashi Tharoor’s candidacy.
